Foot Pain Q & A

Understanding Foot Pain:

What causes it?

How to prevent it?

How to treat it?

More than many other places, New Yorkers walk a lot!

Your feet bear your weight daily, and that may lead to enduring and significant stress. In turn, that stress may bring about acute or chronic pain. Some of the many conditions which can  contribute to foot pain include:

- Plantar fasciitis
- Bunions
- Gout and arthritis
- Hammertoes
- Tendonitis
- Flat feet and fallen arches
- Calluses and corns
- Turf toe
- Heel spurs
- Stress fractures
- Ingrown toenails
- Nerve damage
- Broken bones and toes

Preventing Foot Pain:

Tips for New Yorkers

Living in the hustle and bustle of New York City means being on your feet often. Here are some tips to help prevent foot pain and maintain healthy feet:

- Choose shoes with arch support and a slightly raised heel if you have high arches.
- Limit wearing flip-flops as they offer minimal protection and support.
- Maintain a healthy weight to reduce strain on your feet.
- Wear appropriate footwear when exercising or playing sports.
- Avoid high heels and pointed-toe shoes that can exert pressure on your feet and toes.
- Opt for supportive, cushioned shoes, especially if you spend a lot of time standing.
- Check your wet footprints to determine if you have flat feet or fallen arches, and use the proper support.
- Avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces.
- Trim toenails straight across and avoid cutting the corners to prevent ingrown toenails.

Obtaining Treatment:

 When to See a Podiatrist

It’s important for you to consult a podiatrist if you experience any of the following:

- Unstable feet when you step down or bear weight.
- Any signs of infection such as redness, pain, swelling, fever, pus, or warmth at a specific spot on either foot.
- Persistent foot problems which are not improving.
- Feet that become pale, white, or blue, or feel cold.
- Inability to move your foot or stand up on your feet.
- Twisted or deformed foot.
- Numbness or tingling in the foot.
- Bruises that last longer than 14 days.
